Alumni Career Award
The Alumni Association's most prestigious honor, this award is to be given to an alumnus/a who has revealed the quality of educational excellence as encouraged by The University of Maine and who has exemplified an outstanding record in professional, business, civic, or other public service. See past recipients.
Criteria:
1. Only one award shall be made annually but the committee shall consider all nominations.
2. The board shall establish guidelines for submitting nominations.
3. The cmmittee shall communicate its proceedings in writing for the selection of a candidate to the president of the UM Alumni Association in time for contact to be made with a proposed recipient to make the proper announcement at least ten months in advance of the award. This was voted by the Board of Directors on October 15, 1971.
4. The decision must emphasize the honor and recognition the award reflects on The University of Maine.
5. Selection shall be based on the availability of the person chosen to be present in Orono to receive the award.
Bernard Lown Alumni Humanitarian Award
Criteria:
The Bernard Lown Alumni Humanitarian Award was established by the University of Maine Alumni Association to recognize and honor graduates who distinguish themselves in humanitarian service.
This award will be bestowed from time to time, on those individuals who dedicate their talents and energies to the affirmation of life, the creation of a benevolent, peaceful society and the perpetuation of a caring, nurturing civilization.
Fogler Legacy Award
Criteria:
Established in 2003, The Fogler Legacy Award is presented annually to one family that has a tradition of attending the University of Maine. The recipient must include a minimum of three generations of graduates.
At least two of the family members must have a record of outstanding service to their alma mater, the Alumni Association, their community, and/or their profession.
Pine Tree Emblem Alumni Service Award
Criteria:
Among the points which shall be considered in making the award are the following:
1. The diversified services rendered on behalf of the University of Maine through the UMaine Alumni Association.
2. Length and quality of service.
3. Recognized leadership among alumni with acknowledged success in life, profession, business or public service.
It should be understood that it is not intended that the foregoing points are given in any order of importance nor necessarily complete. They shall be used for the committee to consider the relative value of qualifications of persons nominated for the award. Former employees of the UMAA may be considered for this award.
Number of Awards:
No more than one Pine Tree Emblem Alumni Service Award shall be presented each year.
Hilda Sterling '55 Class Correspondent Award
This award is presented annually to an alumnus/a for exemplary service to the class as class correspondent. See past recipients.
Criteria:
This award is presented annually to an alumnus/a for exemplary service to their class as class correspondent. This award may be predicated by:
- length of service
- commitment to the class
- quality of communication
The award was named by the Class of 1955 in honor of their classmate and longtime class correspondent, Hilda Sterling '55.
Black Bear Award
The Black Bear Award is presented annually in appreciation of outstanding service to the University. See past recipients.
Criteria:
1. Devotion to the aims of the University in teaching, research, and public service.
2. Exemplification of high ideals in personal life.
3. Length and quality of service to the University or to the Alumni Association. Former employees of UMAA may be considered for this award.
4. Standing among alumni.
5. Recipients of the Pine Tree Emblem Award are not eligible.
6. Recipient need not be an alumnus/a.
Procedures:
Nominations shall be sought from the alumni at large.
Number of Awards:
Four awards may be presented annually. The Selection Committee may recommend additional candidates to the Board of Directors.
Block "M" Alumni Activties Award
The object of this award is to maintain and develop strong and active goodwill for the University through work in local organizations, class activities and the University of Maine Alumni Association. See past recipients.
Criteria:
The activities to be given consideration, singly or in combination, are the following:
1.Strengthening of alumni awareness evidenced by actively serving on committees, preparing mailings, or any other service encouraging participation which is of a definite and constructive value.
2. Individual class participation through support of class activities such as service as a class officer, class fundraising and encouragement of support of annual giving.
3. Public support for the University whenever appropriate.
4. Legislative support and/or interpretation of the same.
5. Participation in the Annual Alumni Fund through time and effort to ensure success.
6. Former employees of the UMAA may be considered for this award.
7. Recipients of the Pine Tree Emblem Award, the Black Bear Award, and Board of Directors members are not eligible for the Block "M" Alumni Activities Award.
Number of Awards
As many as six awards may be presented annually. The Selection Committee may recommend additional candidates to the Board of Directors.
Procedure
The President of the UMAA shall appoint at least five alumni to serve as the Selection Committee.
Nominations shall be sought from the alumni at large.
1. The Committee is to select the outstanding nominees to receive the award for that year.
2 The awards will be presented at the annual Reunion weekend awards breakfast.
3. An award may be presented at a local association meeting if the recipient is not present at the Reunion breakfast.
Spirit of Maine Achievement Award
This newly established award is given to a UMaine alumnus/a who has graduated in the last fifteen years and whose accomplishments, commitment, and initiative in a profession, business, or public service arena reflect the high standards and vitality of The University of Maine. See past recipients.
Criteria:
This award is given to an alumnus/a who has graduated in the last fifteen years and whose accomplishments, commitment, and initiative in a profession, business, or public service arena reflect the high standards and vitality of the University of Maine. Unlike the awards listed above, this award is presented during Homecoming festivities each fall.
Golden "M" Award
Presented to a member of the 50-year Reunion class for outstanding class service and/or class leadership since graduation. Nominees for this award are solicited by means of a 50-year Reunion class ballot and are not accepted online. See past recipients.
Criteria:
Nominees to be solicited by means of reunion class mailing prior to their 50th Reunion. Recipient will be chosen by a selection committee designated by the class officers. Nominees for this award are not accepted online.
This award was established in 1982 by Roger Castle in memory of Emilie "Em" Kritter '21, longtime class secretary to the Class of 1921.
Distinguished MAINE Professor
Sponsored by the Class of 1942, this award honors those professors who exemplify the highest qualities of teaching, research and public service - in that order. Nominees for this award are solicited by means of on-campus mailings to the deans of the colleges of BPPH, E+HD, Eng, LAS, and NFSA and are not accepted online. See past recipients.
Nomination Procedure:
Each spring semester, the dean of each college shall appoint and convene a DMP Student/Faculty Nominating Committee for the purpose of nominating candidates for consideration by the DMP Selection Committee.
Each college is asked to present at least one(1), but no more than three (3), faculty candidates for consideration.
Candidates for the Distinguished Maine Professor Award should exemplify the highest qualities of teaching, research, and public service - in that order.
Candidates must be tenured faculty and will be evaluated on the following basis:
A. The respect and devotion a professor has to education, the pursuit of knowledge, and his/her students.
B. Teaching effectiveness.
1. The intellectual content of a professor's classes.
2. Classroom presentation. This is to include:
- articulateness, but not necessarily cleverness
- class time, meaningfully spent
- opportunity for student initiative in learning
- intellectually challenging examinations
- opportunity (depending on class size) for student discussion of differing viewpoints.
3. Professor's availability to all students in addition to regular office hours and concern with students' intellectual and personal development.
4. Demonstrated ability to challenge and inspire students to reach beyond themselves in the search for academic achievement.
C. Professional and scholarly accomplishments.
1. Overall contributions to the educational and institutional excellence of the University of Maine outside of the classroom.
2. Scholarly reputation among colleagues inside and outside of the University of Maine.
3. Be perceived by students as role models for other professionals in their fields.
D. Public Service Activity.
1. Department/college/campus service, including committee membership and advising student organizations.
2. Public service including both compensated and uncompensated public service activity, particularly service that contributes to the economy, culture and quality of life of citizens of Maine, the region and the nation.
