The Ladies Who Lunch on the Fourth Friday in June met again this year at Cyn Rockwell Wright’s home in Round Pond. Word is that this will soon be Cyn and Chuck’s permanent address. As usual the food was excellent—poached salmon, two types of salads, chocolate cake, lemon squares, etc. Patti Dessler Ewen and I did our usual caravan, starting in Bristol, CT, hitting West Roxbury, MA, Wells, Round Pond, Belfast, and Gardiner, ME, and continuing on to Portsmouth, NH, before finally hitting West Roxbury and Bristol to end the circle. It was great to see all the crew again. Jane Quimby Biscoe acted as the treasurer while president Herb Cohen and the rest of the husbands present went to have their own talkfest while the ladies did theirs. Lois Perkins Cross read us a poem that had us in stitches and glasses were raised in honor of our classmates who have performed extraordinarily during the past year. As usual it was a GOOD TIME with GREAT FOOD and most importantly GREAT FRIENDS.
Maine sport figures recognized for their contributions to interscholastic activities by the Maine Principals Association in May included Walter H. Abbott ’65G. Walt spent 55 years at the University of Maine, first as a student, and then head football coach, interim athletic director, and director of the outdoor leadership program. In the fall of 2018, the university will welcome Walt’s granddaughter, Hannah, who is also the daughter of the former UMaine athletic director, Steve Abbot. Hannah, who is the leading scorer in field hockey for Cheverus High as a midfielder, was selected to the first team for the Southwestern Maine Activities Association.
Also honored by being selected for the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame was Daniel G. Rearick ’61. Dan set the record at the university for the mile (4:13.9) the year we graduated. He was a member of N.E. Championship cross country teams in 1955, ’56, and ’57. He was a winner in 1957 and 1958 at the Maine Intercollegiate AA Championships. Dan also captained two track squads and two cross country teams.
So sorry to have to report the passing of one of the ladies who lunch—Patti Dessler Ewen on July 6th. More in the next issue.
Again, I ask for info from the members of the Class of ’58. No news is not good news!
Finally, please mark your calendars for next September’s reunion in Orono. The Reunion will take place on September 13-15, 2018. Hope to see you there!
