Time for the news: A year ago spring Jane Goode took a Seine River cruise from Paris to the Normandy beaches. This year Jane took a cruise from Miami to Havana, Cienfuegos, and Santiago, Cuba. Ever moving, this fall Jane took a Rhone River cruise.
During her not travel time, she had a pleasant visit with Nancy Kennedy Hostler and husband Bill. Marcia Sayward Blake made her annual trip South and spent a month in Florida playing golf, beaching, and finding many good restaurants. Later in the year she and her daughter’s family travelled to the Grand Bahamas and even swam in open water with a dolphin. Another roaming classmate, Etta Libby Davenport enjoyed a vacation trip through the Middle East, where she visited many of the holy sites and had her first camel ride.
Had a nice long message from Jane Judy Carroll. Following graduation, Jane spent 20 years teaching biology in a lovely ocean-oriented location—Vero Beach, FL. Jane decided to change course and studied and then taught in the counseling department at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Jane opened a private psychotherapy practice in Charlotte and later in Black Mountain, NC, where she now lives. Jane spends some of her retirement time traveling to Ocean Isle Beach on the North Carolina coast. It is a relatively quiet, undeveloped area where she can enjoy being near the beach and ocean, watching the boaters, and wandering around in a golf cart.
Nancy Rich Marbury retired from St Paul’s School for Girls, Baltimore, MD, after 39 years of service. Nancy taught history, was upper school head, assistant head of the school, and archivist. Heard from Alethe Flint Donaldson that she enjoyed a mini reunion at Pat’s Pizza with Jeannine Macomber Hunter, Sandra Young Fowler ’73G, Tobey Lee, and Gail Greenleaf ’60. Blake Donaldson ’62 sat at the head of the table as the girls caught up on all the family news.
Fred Stubbert is filling his retirement time as chairman of the Waterville Area Solid Waste Committee as well as being active on the Airport Board working to get a new terminal. David and Nancy Quigg Smith moved back to Hampden 14 years ago after many years in Massachusetts. They are fortunate to be able to summer at Matunuck Beach, RI, in the place they’ve owned for more than 50 years. Had a long note from Ann Coffin Hicock ’63G, who had a rough year with shoulder surgery that required a $2,700 screw. In true New Jersey humor, Ann commented that she could have gotten a better deal at Home Depot. Ann did manage to visit with Jean McNeary Woodard, Norine Hunt Clarke, Jane Petherbridge Ives, Cynthia Downing Tanous Marx ’82 C.A.S., and Anne Wescott Dodd at a luncheon at the Hicock camp.
Meg Thompson Villarreal and Etta Libby Davenport represented our class at Maine Day and caught up with “our adopted Class of 2020.” Meg is looking for suggestions for creative ways to reach out to the class and provide support as mentors and alumni. She is looking for alums willing to interact with one or several students. She also needs volunteers to help with on-campus outreach. Class president Andy McGarry and former president Larry Schiner want to thank all classmates who contributed to our class scholarship fund as well as other areas of support over the years. Each year sees a legacy student of the class receive funding from the scholarship fund. In celebration of our 55th Reunion, the class donated $55,000 to the university.
As for my news, I’ve joined a gym and after two month of being a gym rat tore my knee and required surgery. I always joked with the gals in the locker room that I could “read their lives in their hip, tummy, and knee scars!” Now I have joined the ranks. On a happier note, I traveled in July to Ft. Bragg for the change of the command at the 16th MP Brigade. Youngest, Colonel Gingee Guilmartin, moved on to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.
