Harmon D. & Jane Stevens Harvey
Summer greetings to you all, and here is another column for the alumni magazine. Those of you who follow us regularly will recall that we last expressed concern that our columns are being increasingly shortened as we receive less and less news from classmates. With this plea we unfortunately received an email from Sharon Gassman Potter with notice that her spouse, Harry E. Potter, had passed on. Harry was born in Caribou, ME, in 1927. He graduated from Williams HS in Oakland, ME, and spent two years, 10 months and eight days in the US Army Air Corps before college. He received his degree in agricultural engineering.
At his first “real job” Harry met his “first wife” Sharon and they were married September 8, 1956. Total years together — 62. Harry became known as “the original Harry Potter“ after the books came out. He was very active in his Methodist Church, belonged to the Masonic Lodge #53 in Sidney, ME, was secretary and chairman of his town planning board, and involved in numerous conservation efforts as well as owning a small flock of sheep. He enjoyed a large collection of Marilyn Monroe photos and was best known for his easygoing nature. Harry is survived by a large family. Our condolences go out to Sharon and her family.
After some friendly chiding about class participation in providing shareable news for this column, we have received a notice from Orono, as did some others, that this year, 2019, is a reunion year for the Class of ’54, celebrating 65 years as UMaine grads! History will show that at our 60th Reunion no specific ongoing class officers were elected, but thanks to some real leadership, Al Fernald stepped up and helped us set some direction. An interim advisory committee was set up for determining our plans for this upcoming occasion. We have asked the Alumni Association to provide us with as much information as it can on the current status of classmates. With that in hand, you’ll hear much more from us!
Think 65th in September?
