Hello, classmates,
My hope was to give you “great detail” of the plans for our 60th Reunion in 2023! At the time this column was due “great detail” was just not available. However, by the time you read this column, that information will be on the UMaine Alumni Association website. If you have any questions, please go to the website and check
out our class page. I hope to see many of you at what definitely will be a fun event.
Congratulations are in order for Donald P. Berry, who is now in the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. He has served as parliamentarian for the National Officials Board for over 20 years and has officiated at all levels of competition from youth to international meets. He is the referee for several of the major track meets in the country. Don still lives in Belmont, ME.
Alumni familiar with the University Inn Academic Suites near the Stillwater River bridge in Orono will be sorry to hear that the facility has closed. The Guy Whitten family had owned the Inn since 2001. The decision to close was both painful and bittersweet mainly because of the wonderful guests they had served over the years. The family also owns the Black Bear Inn and Conference Center in Orono, and they are excited about the future for that location.
Welcome home to David E. ’65G and Patricia Packard Reed. Over the years Dave’s career found them living in nine different states. They are now in Orono, where they have built a home on the Reed family farm. They both feel “Once a Mainer, always a Mainer.”
Even though recognition was acknowledged in the winter issue of the MAINE Alumni Magazine, Perry Clough needs our kudos in this column. He is the recipient of the 2022 Suzanne Kay Hart ’68 Alumni Service Award. This award recognizes exemplary leadership and extensive service in multiple ways and
over a lengthy period of time to promote the successes, reputation, and value of the University of Maine Alumni Association. Perry has been closely connected with the Alumni Association since graduation. He worked on a revision of the organization’s bylaws and mission statement. Over time he has demonstrated
his strengths of attention to detail, analytical mind, and genuine curiosity for continuous improvement. Perry joins three others from the Class of 1963 who have also received this honor — Jim Goff (in 1990), Sally Grindell Vamvakias (1992), and the late Wes Jordan ’69G (2001).
Another of our classmates was also recently recognized for his achievements over the years. In April our cherished class president Dana Dolloff was inducted into the UMaine College of Engineering Francis Crowe Society as a Distinguished Engineer. Francis Crowe was a 1905 graduate of UMaine and was the chief
engineer for the Hoover Dam. Classmates Ron Brown, Dan Churchill, Stanley Brian Schaefer, and Fred Stoddard have also received this honor. Cheers, Dana. Well done!
I am ending this column by repeating words written before. There would be no column without your news. I sincerely enjoy hearing from you. Plan on attending our 60th Reunion in 2023. See you there.
