Welcome to summer, Class of 1995. As I write it is an absolutely beautiful spring day here in Maine — truly spectacular — and I hope when you are reading this you are experiencing the same in the summer.
As always, please don’t hesitate to send along your information to share with your classmates. Always happy to have new information to share!
I’m so excited to share that Geoffrey Wingard ‘04G and ‘05G was named Maine’s 2022 State History Teacher of the Year by the Guilder Lehrman Institute of American History, a nonprofit that promotes American history education. Geoffrey has taught at Bangor High School for 21 years and is head of the school’s history department. What sets him apart in his teaching style is that of learning alongside his students — he says this is why he loves teaching high schoolers, because they push back and challenge him with their own thoughts and opinions. Before leaning into teaching, Geoffrey was a police officer in Rockland, where he realized his love for learning and academics, which ultimately saw him return to UMaine to earn his master’s degree. Congratulations to Geoffrey on the award!
Also in education, Carla Magoon resigned from her position as principal at Sedgwick Elementary School. Carla was in the role for five years and intends to look for another education position, likely teaching. Her peers note her excellent communication skills with children as well as her strong support of the staff as her strengths in the role. Best wishes in your new role, Carla!
My last update is from my high school classmate, Aaron Carlson. He doesn’t live too far away from me, over in Gorham, and he’s recently been promoted to VP of operations at Kyndryl. Kyndryl is an IT company focusing on digital solutions and systems as well as cloud services, enterprise data services, and security and resiliency services. Kyndryl is based in New York, NY, and has over 90,000 employees. Congratulations to Aaron!
Thanks for taking the time to send in updates and for reading the column. I hope to hear from you soon!
