Hello, summer! I am writing this column at the end of another winter of erratic weather that caused so much destruction from coast to coast. I am hoping that neither you nor your families were negatively impacted by any of the storms, and summer is bringing you sunshine and clear skies. On the first Monday…
Hello, all. I hope that your autumn was lovely and your holidays joyful! I am writing at the end of another summer on Mount Desert Island, thankful to be able to spend five months each year at “home.” Classmate news over the past few months mostly involves travels and get-togethers. For Don Ouellette the summer…
Hello, everyone. I hope that your summer is going well and that you have news to share with your classmates: adventures, travels, family reunions, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, etc. I do have some special news from our 60th. As you know, we exceeded our scholarship goal. Our account principal is now over $100,000. What we did…
On September 7th, 40 of our classmates and friends gathered at the Schoodic Institute for our fabulous 60th pre-Reunion. This quiet campus in the more remote part of Acadia is home to many conferences, workshops, school field trips, and retreats. If you haven’t visited the Schoodic Peninsula on a trip to Acadia, plan to the…
Summer greetings, everyone! I hope that you are packed and ready to join us for our 60th Reunion in September. It is mid-March as I write this column, and I am happy to report that even at this early date, over 20 classmates have made reservations at Schoodic for our pre-Reunion event. As part of…
Hello, everyone! As I write this column, we are at the end of another summer still wondering when we will finally be rid of COVID. I do hope that by the time you read this you will have been able to celebrate the holidays with your family, and that all of you are well. I…
Diane Ingalls Zito 24 South Hills Drive Bedford, NH 03110 bluewatersailors@comcast.net facebook.com/groups/UMaineClass1962/ I write this column in March, exactly one year after we were all told to quarantine. What a year it has been! My biggest hope is that you are all well, have been vaccinated, and are managing our “new normal.” Can you believe…
Hello, friends. I am at home on Mount Desert Island, writing this column at the end of the strangest summer most of us can ever remember: safely distanced outdoor dinners with family and friends, and masked walks through Acadia. As you read this, my hope is that you and yours are healthy and safe and…
Diane Ingalls Zito Hello all! First and most importantly, I hope that all of you are safe and healthy. As you know we have had to postpone our 80th summer Birthday Party until August of 2021 due to COVID-19. While this is disappointing, the health and wellbeing of classmates is the most important consideration of…
Diane Ingalls Zito Hello to all of you! I hope that your summer and fall were as pleasant as mine and this column finds you all doing well. New addresses and contact information seem to be the theme of most of the emails I have received recently. Friends, we are a class on the move.…
Diane Ingalls Zito I am writing this column as snow covers the ground here in New Hampshire, but you’ll be reading it in the warm weather. Let me take this opportunity to wish each of you a very happy and healthy summer. I do hope that most of you had the pleasure of reading “A…
Diane Ingalls Zito 24 South Hills Drive Bedford, NH 03110 bluewatersailors@comcast.net www.facebook.com/groups/UMaineClass1962/ A warm hello to all of you from Mount Desert Island, where we are fortunate to have escaped the heat that is covering most of the country this summer. It is mid-July as I write this, and fingers crossed, the weather will…
Diane Ingalls Zito 24 South Hills Drive Bedford, NH 03110 bluewatersailors@comcast.net www.facebook.com/groups/UMaineClass1962/ Beautiful sunny, warm days greeted more than 50 classmates and their guests to our 55th Reunion. Spectacular weather left us with wonderful memories of oceanside lunches, scenic rides through Acadia National Park, and a sunset cruise on Frenchman Bay at the pre-Reunion activities…
Diane Ingalls Zito 24 South Hills Drive Bedford, NH 03110 bluewatersailors@comcast.net www.facebook.com/groups/UMaineClass1962/ Hello to all of you. As I write this we are in the last stages of preparation for our 55th Reunion. It promises to be a great event. I will fill you in with all the details in the spring issue. A…
I am an alumnus of the class of 1962, have had my career outside the Pine Tree State, and am now retired. Recently, The Goose River Press of Waldoboro published my book of memoir stories of growing up in Maine and under my Maine heritage and influences. These stories span from age five to my…
Class of 1962 Class Project
Many of us chose to attend the University of Maine because it offered an affordable education…either through low cost tuition or the availability of a scholarship. Few of us realized the effect that our education would have on our lives. For many, it was a life-changing effect.
Today, UMaine still offers affordable education but it is able to do that only through private support from generous alumni and friends. Public support of UMaine has diminished significantly compared to the levels at the time we were students.
Scholarships are a key part of keeping UMaine affordable and the Class of ’62 Sterritt Scholarship is a good example of the type of scholarship that makes it possible. The scholarship has been funded with donations of approximately $22,000 and currently has a market value of $44,000.
Perhaps you don’t remember Valerie Beck Sterritt. She was a speech major, Sophomore Eagle, All Maine Woman and Tri Delta. She had a wonderful smile, friendly nature and embodied the UMaine spirit. The scholarship was established in her memory in 1963 and continues to support students to this day.
As you think of the effect UMaine had on your life, you may see the value of leaving a legacy that will allow future students to enjoy a similar experience. A contribution to the Class of ’62 Sterritt Scholarship is one good way to do that. Please consider joining your classmates by making a contribution to the scholarship fund.
