On December 14, 1906, eleven men, representing eight of the fraternities, met to form an organization whose purpose would be to recognize dedicated service to the University of Maine, to promote campus spirit, to keep an eye on the fraternities, and to educate new students about our alma mater. This upstanding on-campus brotherhood would be known as the Senior Skull Society.
In pursuit of their founding purpose, in 1911 the Senior Skulls created the Sophomore Owls Honor Society, whose charge became to orient the freshman. In 1913 the Skulls called a meeting of representatives from all campus fraternities to form the nation’s first viable Interfraternity Council. At that time, approval of all student groups was at the discretion of the Senior Skulls, and our organization began laying the foundation for a vibrant campus culture centered on student engagement that has enabled the student life ecosystem we celebrate today.
The Senior Skull Society continued uninterrupted until World War II, when it ceased to exist for three years. It was revived in the fall of 1947, and to this day remains the oldest and highest inclusive honor society at the University of Maine. The achievements of Skulls’ past and present inspire the next generation of leaders.
Although the purpose and duties the Senior Skulls have continuously adapted for over a century to fit the times and better save the institution, today’s Skulls remain recognized as tomorrow’s leaders and a trusted liaison for the students, the administration, and the Black Bear community.
The Skulls are pledged to uphold and promote the ideals of Friendship, Leadership, Obligation, Academics and Dignity, as well as the history and traditions of the University. Skulls actively collaborate with the Alumni Association and the Office of the President to support special events both on and off campus. And, the organization manages the University of Maine Traditions Project, designed to increase awareness of our alma mater’s rich legacy and treasured traditions. These efforts, among others, shape the current work of the Senior Skulls to steward a more rewarding and connected University of Maine experience for all.
