Two major news items to share — one we wish we did not have to report and one about a highly successful 65th Reunion. First, Nancy Roberts Munson has retired from the position of secretary and class correspondence. For 55 consecutive years, Nancy has gathered information about classmates and class activities, and forwarded them on to the magazine editor. I would be willing to bet a small fortune that her column has been the first one read by at least 90 percent of us every issue. To thank her for all she has done for us, her address is 290 Kingstown Way, #292, Duxbury, MA 02332; email munsons@aol.com. Please drop her a note or card.
Second, our 65th Reunion in September was attended by 21 classmates. Our featured events were a barbecue on the Buchanan Alumni House patio with a live band serenading listeners and dancers with ’40s and ’50s swing music — a memory of the Friday night dances at the Memorial Gym (remember them?). Another feature tied into our “Thanks for the Memories” theme was “A Stroll down Memory Lane.” The long walk down the Buchanan hallway featured displays of campus life photos from our Prism. Alice Lane Johnson’s famous Bananas cartoons in the Prism “led the stroll.” Thanks go to the creative ideas of Helen “Duckie” Inman Boomer (The Friday Night Dance), Alola Giffin Morrison (patio barbecue), and Susan Mullaney Cookson ’59H (Stroll Down Memory Lane).
At our class meeting, Evie Stevens Smith ’87G was honored with a Block “M” Award presented by Tom Peaco ’88, UMAA president/CEO. We approved a class gift to the university that will honor the late Charles “Chuck” Peddle, the acclaimed “Father of the personal computer.” Class officers elected were: “Duckie” Boomer, president; Judy Kittredge Carter, vice president; and Peggy Mahar Steck, treasurer. It was great to see Peggy; she made the journey from Atlantic Beach, FL, to be with us.
More good news: our once-meager student scholarship endowment now has a principal amount of $150,067 and a market value of $195,108.
