Class of 1991 Class Note

What a treat it was to meet up with other alumni in the Kansas City area in August. The UMaine Alumni Association President Tom Peaco ’88 was traveling to Kansas and made arrangements for an alumni gathering. We had a lovely afternoon together with 50 years’ worth of alums ranging from the Class of 1972 to the Class of 2024! We laughed at the “back in my day” stories of campus and Orono and marveled at the updates from Tom. In September, my younger sister traveled back to campus for Sandra Caron’s ’79, ’82G retirement party and sent photos of a Kiwibot, the on-campus robotic food delivery system that motors between buildings. Wow, things have changed!

If you have been back to campus recently, let us know what you thought was the most surprising change.

Joan Fortin G stepped down as CEO of Maine’s largest law firm, Bernstein Shur. Joan was associated with the firm for over three decades and was honored as a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2018.

After 30+ years learning from and growing up with the boys and staff of New Hampshire’s Mayhew Program, Jim Nute stepped down as executive director at the end of 2023. Celebrating Jim’s years of dedication, the board and staff surprised him by naming an endowed fund and the newest building on Newfound Lake’s Mayhew Island — home to Mayhew’s summer program for the boys — in his honor. Now, as a volunteer and big fan, Jim looks forward to many more years of supporting Mayhew in challenging and helping New Hampshire boys to find their best. In May, he joined a team of fellow volunteers and alums in readying the island for its 56th Mayhew summer.

Congrats and best wishes to all our classmates starting new adventures.
