Hello, Class of ’97!
I hope this finds you well! The coffee roastery expansion is still underway. It should be up and running early summer. It’s taken much longer than I planned with supply chain bingo and all the things that come with a construction project. I hope to see you in Orono for Homecoming on October 13-15! News to share? Thank you for supporting the UMaine Foundation! The Class of 1997 Scholarship awarded $180 to Isaac Webber, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering. Isaac graduated from Dexter Regional High School, in Dexter, ME.
Welcome back to UMaine, Jeff Comissiong! Congratulations on your new role as the Black Bears defense coordinator and linebackers coach. UMaine’s former starting linebacker was most recently the linebackers coach for Cornell. Jeff has coached at Boston College, Old Dominion, Hampton, and Harvard. In his early career, he was the defensive line coach at Bates and UMaine. “Jeff brings leadership and a wealth of experience. Jeff will embrace our student-athletes and they will thrive under his leadership,” said head coach Jordan Stevens ’10.
Congratulations and best wishes to teacher and Winthrop field hockey coach Sharon Beaudoin Coulton G on retirement. Sharon had coached at Winthrop in some capacity since 1981, rereported the Kennebec Journal. Her record is 335-158-37, and she was part of five state championship teams with the Ramblers, including the Class C crown in 2022 and an undefeated season in 2021. Sharon had retired in June 2022 from teaching but returned to coach in the fall. She told the paper, “Obviously, the 2021 season was fantastic, and we had a large group of seniors, so they seemed to be open for me coming back for one more year, so I was willing to do that. But now, it’s time to be retired.”
Moving from field hockey to ice hockey, if you played with the UMaine women’s team, plan to attend the Homecoming Weekend event for former players. See facebook.com/UMaineWomensIceHockeyAlumni.
For everyone else, there are many reasons to come to Homecoming — hope to see you there!
