Garbage Gulls is a new children’s picture book by Dorson Plourde. The book features two boys on a hot summer day in a strip mall, French fries, and scavenging seagulls. Kirkus Reviews described it as “Lyrical, absurd, and full of wonder.” Dorson teaches art at Stanley elementary School in Waltham, MA.
Another classmate connected to a children’s book is Stacey Harris. Stacey is the inspiration for What She Built, a book that shows how girls can excel in a male-dominated field like civil engineering.
The book company asked Stacey if she wanted to support their mission in inspiring young children to see what women can build in construction. “How do you say no to that? Never thought I’d be a cartoon either,” she said.
“Nobody’s going to look at a little girl in a princess dress and think she belongs in construction until we hear and tell more stories like mine,” Stacey said.
There’s more, but we need a member of the Class of ’11 to pitch in and help write this column twice a year. Please contact abigail.zelz@maine.edu to learn more.
Have a great spring, everyone!
