Class of 2018 Class Note

Hello, Class of 2018!

I invite all of you to send me any information about yourselves and what exciting things have taken place for you since graduation. Feel free to also send me any photos you may want to have published in the MAINE Alumni Magazine. Any little bit of news is newsworthy! Your classmates want to hear from you and what you are doing.

Victoria Hood ‘21G, adjunct instructor in the English Department, organized an event called Readingpalooza, which took place at the Queen City Cinema in Bangor last summer. UMaine alumni were well represented.

Events such as this allow local writers to share their work directly with their audiences and experience the give and take directly. It also offers a chance for creatives to connect with one another enabling artistic networking. In organizing this event, Victoria hoped that this event and others like it will reinvigorate the area’s literary scene.

Tanesha Sutton returned to UMaine women’s basketball as an assistant coach. Tanesha helped lead the team to back-to-back America East Championships in 2017-18 and 2018-19. The Philadelphia native, a two-time All-America East selection including a first team nod in 2018-19, transferred to UMaine from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. The 5-foot-10 guard played three seasons of professional basketball in Sweden, Romania, and Portugal and began her coaching career as an assistant at the Community College of Philadelpha in 2020. Head Coach Amy Vachon said, “We’re really excited to have her back. She was a great player and she is a great person, a hard worker, and really enthusiastic.”

On another note, yours truly has been extremely busy raising awareness of the theme, “Hockey is for everybody.” My daughter, Sarah Joliat, founded the hockey team, Maine Highlanders, for those with physical and cognitive disabilities nearly three years ago.

The Maine Highlands practice each Sunday afternoon at the Alfond in Orono and would welcome anyone that loves to skate or wants to learn how to skate to join them. If interested, contact Coach Joliat at 703-801-3179.
