George Smith ’70

George Smith ’70 received the Alumni Career Award, the Alumni Association’s highest honor. Smith is the former executive director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine (SAM), an organization he led for 18 years. He is also a writer, lobbyist, and television show host. His leadership at SAM brought an increase in conserved land in Maine, and expanded opportunities for sportsmen and outdoors enthusiasts. Smith is a longtime advocate for Maine’s land conservation policy and the traditional use of the state’s forests and waterways.

Smith is also the author of several books, countless newspaper columns spanning more than 25 years, and blogs.
