In honor of Black History Month, the University of Maine Alumni Association proudly celebrates two trailblazing Black alumni who have made significant contributions to our community and beyond.

Frederico Walter Matheas, a member of the Class of 1907, stands as one of UMaine’s earliest Black graduates. His dedication and achievements paved the way for future generations of Black students at our university. More about his life and legacy can be found in “Remembering Bangor: The Queen City Before the Great Fire” by Wayne E. Reilly and “Black Bangor: African Americans in a Maine Community, 1880-1950” by Maureen Lee.
Ada Viola Smith (Peters), Class of 1927, earned her BA in French and is recognized as one of the first Black female graduates of UMaine. Her academic excellence and commitment to education have left an enduring impact on our academic community.
These remarkable individuals exemplify the resilience and excellence that define the Black Bear spirit. Their stories continue to inspire and remind us of the rich diversity that strengthens our UMaine family.
